The 2019-20 school year is officially underway! It is great to see all the new and familiar faces back at NMS. There is a lot of excitement about this school year amongst our staff and we are striving to make this year a great experience for all our students.

This year NMS will continue to focus on growing our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program school-wide. AVID’s focus on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR) helps us concentrate on delivering our curriculum in the best way possible. In addition, it helps students develop the skills they will need to be successful in middle school and beyond. AVID is transforming our teaching and building a culture of academic success. It is very exciting to be a part of. If you want to see AVID in action, ask your student to show you their binder and planner. The binder and planner are part of the organizational structures we learn with AVID.

In addition to AVID, we will also continue to refine our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) systems. PBIS helps us be proactive about our expectations and builds systems of support for student success. If you would like to see PBIS in action, ask your student about Cub Coins. They should be able to tell you what Cub Coins are all about.

This year also brings a lot of “new” to Newport Middle. We have six new teachers: Natalia Aguilar (ESOL), Sarah Black (Spanish), Tiffany Buck (Art), Jan Dickey (6th Humanities), Dana Spink (8th Math) and Ruth Sanders (SLC). In addition Lindsay Losier is our new Speech and Language Pathologist, Kyle Kennedy is our new Media Tech Assistant, Rainbow Bright has joined our SLC team as an assistant, Stormi Ferguson is new to our Custodial Team and we have an entire new Kitchen Staff (Leann Graves, Natasha Morton, Chris Schleiger). This is an amazing group of individuals.

It’s an exciting time of year at Newport Middle. We hope to see you at our many fall events: Open House (9/12), Students Success Parent Night (9/24), football games and volleyball games.
